Leaving Las Vegas – again

My first trip of the new year was to the West Coast Art and Frame Expo, held at the Paris and Bally hotels in Las Vegas.  Once again, members of the Society of Gilders were invited to teach gilding, and we were generously given a booth on the trade show floor (if you scroll past some of the posts below, you can see pictures from last year’s visit).   Rosemary Campbell, our Executive Secretary, and I manned the booth, as you can see – this was on our first day.  I am wearing my Society of Gilders apron, and Rosemary has on the T-shirt.

The tondo frame on the stand is the work of Barrie Lynn Bryant, our Board member, and his wife.  Both Barrie and Leah Fishman, another Board member, were teaching most of the time. After three days, Rosemary and I had invited almost one hundred visitors to try gilding a  small piece of paper.  We added a few new members, and received a lot of appreciative comments.

I did have a chance to visit the rest of the trade show floor, and even ordered some new tools!  This year I did not teach or take any classes, but there were many excellent ones. – Jan 28, 2018

Happy New Year

For those who celebrate the Jewish New Year, and those who don’t, I hope the coming twelve months will bring you joy, good health, and success.

It is time once again for the Creative Hands Art Show, held at Temple Emanu-el, Providence. This year it is just one day.  I hope to see you there!

I will have somethings old and somethings new.  Lately, I have returned to making mezuzahs.  I found a nice, clear plastic box to house each one, for those who do not like it exposed.  The mezuzah can be mounted with Velcro (TM), alone or in the box.  Here are some designs so far:

Mid-summer update

It has been a busy few months, with the Society of Gilders conference in Arlington, Texas, and the opening of the American Guild of Judaic Art exhibit at the Sherwin Miller Museum in Tulsa.

This is me in front of my “Jewel Hamsa”, wearing my project from my

“Little Black Dress” class in the URI Master seamstress II program.

It is a beautiful show, beautifully displayed, and I am proud to be a part of it.

Here is a long view of part of the exhibit.

The Society of Gilders Conference in Arlington, TX, in June was a great success, some say the best so far.  Here students display their class work at the end of the conference.

And I get my props…

Spring is Almost Here!

There has been a lot of rain, and the Pawtuxet River that runs by my building is high and strong.  But today I saw a purple hyacinth, so spring is coming.

I just learned that three pieces of my artwork were accepted for an upcoming show at the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa, OK.  I will be sending my new Jewel Hamsa, (Editor’s Note: this piece sold at the exhibit.)

Hashkiveinu (Hide Us) ,

and Song of Songs.

I also got the happy news that I am invited back to the West Coast Art & Frame Show to teach again next year!

Speaking of the WCAF, while there I found a wonderful new frame for my Hineni print.  I will be using it from now on.

Leaving Las Vegas

The trip to the West Coast Art and Frame show in Las Vegas was a lot of fun.  I had 20 students for my “Gilding on Bevels” class.

The Society of Gilders also had a booth, thanks to the generosity of Picture Framing Magazine.  We had a lot of traffic, and gained 9 new members!

I spent time on the trade show floor, and learned about the latest in materials and equipment for the framing industry.  I also got some samples of new mouldings that I may use for framing my limited edition prints.

I was joined by some of my other SOG friends – Barrie, Rosemary and Leah.  Barrie and Leah also taught, while Rosemary held down the fort.

There were social events, plus time to sightsee the hotels  – all of which have amazing decorative painting and gilding.

The banners in the booth were created by Micki Cavanah – if you look closely at the one on the left, you will see me gilding carved lettering on a granite boulder.

Now I am home and back at work.
