This invitation was decorated for a friend of mine. I used bells as a symbol of their joy. There are pearls mixed in with the quilling.

Leaving Las Vegas – again
My first trip of the new year was to the West Coast Art and Frame Expo, held at the Paris and Bally hotels in Las Vegas. Once again, members of the Society of Gilders were invited to teach gilding, and we were generously given a booth on the trade show floor (if you scroll past some of the posts below, you can see pictures from last year’s visit). Rosemary Campbell, our Executive Secretary, and I manned the booth, as you can see – this was on our first day. I am wearing my Society of Gilders apron, and Rosemary has on the T-shirt.
The tondo frame on the stand is the work of Barrie Lynn Bryant, our Board member, and his wife. Both Barrie and Leah Fishman, another Board member, were teaching most of the time. After three days, Rosemary and I had invited almost one hundred visitors to try gilding a small piece of paper. We added a few new members, and received a lot of appreciative comments.
I did have a chance to visit the rest of the trade show floor, and even ordered some new tools! This year I did not teach or take any classes, but there were many excellent ones. – Jan 28, 2018
Jewel Hamsa
A hamsa is a good luck charm, common to many cultures. This hamsa features the word “Mazel” or “luck”. It is made entirely of quilling, and the Hebrew letters and other accents are edged in 23k gold leaf. In addition, the inner bevels of both the inner oval mat and outer rectangular mat are hand-gilded. The piece measures 11 x 14 and is in a striking red, wooden scoop frame.
This work was part of the wonderful exhibit of art by members of the American Guild of Judaic Art, at the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa, OK in the summer of 2017.
Happy New Year
For those who celebrate the Jewish New Year, and those who don’t, I hope the coming twelve months will bring you joy, good health, and success.
It is time once again for the Creative Hands Art Show, held at Temple Emanu-el, Providence. This year it is just one day. I hope to see you there!
I will have somethings old and somethings new. Lately, I have returned to making mezuzahs. I found a nice, clear plastic box to house each one, for those who do not like it exposed. The mezuzah can be mounted with Velcro (TM), alone or in the box. Here are some designs so far:
