Baruch Haba – Welcome

“Baruch Haba” is taken from Psalm 118:26, and literally means “Blessed is the one who comes”. It is often found as a welcome greeting in a home. This piece is quilled and framed with a decorative double mat. It is about 6″ x 8″, in a custom frame.

Aleph-Bet

The letters of the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph Bet) are illustrated with quilling. The piece comes with a key giving the words in Hebrew and English. It is framed with a distressed wood-look frame, and the glazing is acrylic. The final size is 19″ x 25″.

This aleph-bet was sold to a dear friend of mine. I would enjoy making another, that could be customized to your request. Please contact me if you are interested.

Hallelujah

Gilded, raised, Hebrew letters on parchment say “Hallelujah”. It is done in the style of antique illuminated manuscripts. The painted ornament is done with hand-mixed egg tempera paints. I learned how to do all this in a class with Patricia Miranda many years ago. I recently cut the mats, and the inner mat is covered with paper that I marbleized in a class with Regina and Dan St. John at the School for Bookbinding Arts. It takes a village to learn art techniques! The framed size is 10″ x 12″. Tax (6%) and shipping will be added at checkout.

Only a few left for this year

We are supposed to recline at the Passover seder, like carefree people did in days of yore. But who has a pillow that is suitable? Here is the perfect solution – a standard size pillow case that illustrates the Passover song “Who Knows One?” On the back, is a picture of matzoh. Put it on any regular bed pillow, and after the seder, you can fold it away for the next year. Each case comes with a “midrash” – an explanation of the symbols I chose, and also washing instructions.

The case is made of a heavy weight 100% cotton, and is pre-washed.

I created this picture with paint and cut paper, then digitally adjusted it to optimize it for the custom fabric printing service that I use. The matzoh is from a digital photograph that I took of a real matzoh. Each case is individually sewn by me, with a Velcro closure on the back.

Etrog Box – Four Species

An etrog box protects your etrog (citron) during the week of Sukkot. This design is based on the four species celebrated during Sukkot – the palm, myrtle, willow, and etrog. The design is quilled. The Hebrew letters are formed with 23K gold leaf, and say “You shall rejoice.” The walnut box was made by Merle Krueger and is 5 1/2 ” x 8″ x 4 1/2″h, with a magnetic closing. Ki Teitzei

This is a representation of a verse from Parshat “Ki Teitzei”, Deut 22:6, “Thou shalt not take the dam with the young”. This is one of the laws regarding the humane treatment of animals, and by extension, all living creatures. “Dam” is an old word for “mother”, that was in the translation I used. Unfortunately, I learned later that not too many people are familiar with that term. The finished size is about 13 x 18.

It is created using quilling and gouache painting.

Chess Set

This original, functional chess set is made entirely from coiled discs of paper, highlighted with 23-carat gold, and coated with a protective varnish. The pieces range from two inches to three inches high, with a one inch diameter at the base. The set comes in a fitted box with spare pawns. This chess set was part of an exhibit on contemporary gilding at the Newark Art Museum, NJ.

Flights of Fancy

This piece was originally created for a gilding exhibit. The balloon is made primarily of quilling paper, some edged with 23k gold, but then I inserted plastic “cameos” . The balloon is about 2 1/2″ in radius. The goose basket is quilling and gold leaf over paper. The dragon is 23k gold leaf over textured paper, glazed with gouache paint. The castle is made of different papers woven and shaped, covered with 23k gold, aluminum, and copper leaves.
The background was painted with gouache and watercolor on torn paper. The glass used for framing was covered with “bricks” using the technique of verre eglomise, or reverse gilding on glass. They are made with variegated metal leaf, hand etched and backed with glaze. The entire piece is framed with a narrow gold shadow box molding. This won the “People’s Choice Award” at the Bristol Art Museum “Air” show in 2010.

It is approximately 14″ x 16″, and 4″ deep.

Right now, this is in the Museum of Gilding Arts in Pontiac, IL (see “News” above. ) It is temporarily not for sale.

Song of Songs

“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine” comes from the “Song of Songs (6:3)”, ascribed to Solomon. This phrase , also shown here in the original Hebrew, “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li”, is part of the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony.

The original watercolor was digitally reproduced by the giclee process with archival ink and paper. A few updates were made to the giclee to increase legibility and highten colors. It was then ornamented by hand with 23k gold leaf, with both raised and textured styles. Each picture has been gilded individually and uniquely, and only a small number will be made. It is surrounded by double acid-free mats in cream and a pastel shade, and a gold-tone wood frame. The final size is 13 x 16. Matting and framing will vary slightly depending on artist’s whim.
