Michael and Marilyn Smith, of the Shalom Memorial Chapel in Cranston, RI, asked me to create a piece for the chapel. Marilyn had seen my work and wanted me to create an original, quilled piece. It was to be based on the “K’riah”, the pin-on ribbon that is torn to symbolize the rending of the garments when someone has died. The artwork also needed to be the same size (32 x 40) and overall colors (blues) as the existing artwork in the chapel. I began with some sketches, and with much back and forth over several months, the projects has been completed, and is now hanging in the chapel. Marilyn was thrilled with it, and said that in her mind, she was jumping up and down! It is wonderful to have one’s work so appreciated. Thank you, Marilyn and Michael!

My work was featured in the March 16, 2012 issue of the “Jewish Voice and Herald” , which serves the Jewish communities of Rhode Island and SE Massechusetts. The article took up the majority of two pages, and included three color photographs, which is quite an honor. Nancy Abeshaus, who wrote the article, did an excellent job – she listened to me babble, and was able to sort through all the information to find the salient points, and present everything accurately and in a very complimentary way – how refreshing! Nancy Kirsch, the editor, was also full of praise for my work, and allowed the generous article. I am very pleased! Here is the link to the article: http://www.jvhri.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2594:a-portrait-of-an-artist&catid=41:community&Itemid=62 It only has one picture; there was also a picture of me, and a picture of my “Who Knows One”, which you can see on this website under “Current” .

Happy Passover to all!

This depicts the three pilgrim festivals, or “shelosh regalim” . Passover is symbolized by Moses in the bullrushes, Shavuot is when the Torah was received at Mt Sinai, and for Sukkot, a booth or sukkah is constructed. On all three festivals, it was the custom to travel to Jerusalem to worship at the temple there. Different harvests were also celebrated at these times.
